Our Story

Founder & President

Mary Kogut Lowell has practiced law in a variety of settings, including private law firms; a legal aid organization, where she served as Manager of Community Economic Development; a domestic violence center, where she served as Director of Justice Programs; a Florida state agency, where she was a Managing Attorney; and in-house at a major airline. She is thrilled to work with team members Mary Cannon, attorney at law, and Mary Sue Schmaltz, business and economic writer/consultant, who both share her passion for legal and business writing.

Mary Kogut Lowell, Esq.

President & Director

Mary Kogut Lowell is President and Director of Kogut & Cannon, P.A. She earned her Bachelor of Arts with distinction and her Master of Arts degrees at the University of Michigan, majoring in Romance Languages and Literatures, followed by her Juris Doctor from the Wayne State University School of Law and Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Florida. Ms. Kogut Lowell is a professor in addition to her legal work, having taught graduate courses including Professional Writing at the University of Florida College of Business, Antitrust Law at Barry College of Law, and Domestic Violence Law at Florida A&M University College of Law.

Mary Cannon, Esq.

Vice President & Director

Attorney Mary Cannon joined the firm in 2016 and today serves as the firm's Vice President and Director. Ms. Cannon holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Florida College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, along with a Juris Doctor from the Florida State University College of Law. In law school, Ms. Cannon served as Executive Editor of the Journal of Transnational Law and Policy, received an award for Distinguished Pro Bono Service, and was named to the Dean's List. Ms. Cannon also clerked for a Ninth Circuit Court judge in the felony criminal division and contributed to the Spanish translation of the Constitution of the State of Florida.

Mary Sue Schmaltz

Writer & Consultant

Mary Sue Schmaltz earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish at Western Michigan University. She holds a Master’s degree in International Policy from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, with post-graduate certificates in International Finance and Global Investments. Ms. Schmaltz worked in several New York-based financial institutions in the area of global institutional investments and participated in community development and capital markets projects in Russia during the initial years of its economic transition. In her work as a writer, Ms. Schmaltz advocates for socially and environmentally responsible business and economic models.
